Helping Young Adults Find Viable Alternatives to Military Service
We are a project of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Central Committee. U.S. Mennonites have a 500-year history of seeking peaceful, nonviolent responses to conflict.
As WWII approached, Mennonites joined with the Quakers, the Church of the Brethren and others to ensure that conscientious objectors to war could do alternative service under civilian administration rather than fight in the war. Known as Civilian Public Service, nearly 12,000 young draftees chose this path, working in forestry, conservation, and mental health services rather than military service.
During the Vietnam War, many conscientious objectors worked in U.S. hospitals, or worked in overseas settings (including Vietnam) in the areas of education, medicine, community development, and agriculture.
We believe that every human being is made in the image of God and that the way of love and mutual respect is our only hope for a world where all can live in justice and peace.
